In order for any collager to get anything done there is a certain system that must be set up first. My system makes collaging a breeze. It includes:
- A Binder. It can be one large binder – which is fine for me, multiple small binders, or a 12+”Scrapbooking binder. Just make sure your plastic inserts are the corresponding size.
- Plastic inserts. Mine are 9″x11″. You can also purchase large 12″x12″ ones for scrapbooking.
- A Labelmaker
- Time, patience, and ideas.

This picture shows most of my collection right now. It does not include a box I call “in progress”, a box completely of backgrounds, and a pile of pages for miniature magazines (I could really go OCD and color organize the backgrounds but I want to try to have a real life
). My in progress box is when I rip out pages from magazines and I don’t have the time or energy to REALLY cut them out perfectly. Working on that box is great when I have free time and want to spark some ideas.
The categories I labeled my plastic inserts with include food, flowers, environmentalism, phrases, mouths, greeting cards, numbers and letters, photographed people, non-photographed people (mostly drawings), animals and robots, plants, hearts, shoes, mouths, things, music, city life, and transportation. I also have separate pockets for ideas, like a vision board, a collage for the boyfriend, or a brain collage.

This is my work area in my room. Yes, I sat cross-legged on the floor for quite a few hours but that was only because I recently went through everything. I needed to spread out and it was a little bit messy for a while. I tried to keep my scraps contained in the box in the lower left corner for recycling. The lid of the box is for my “things” insert. When I’m done I put my in progress box back on the shelf for another day.
Oh yeah, check out a bit about my half craft storage closet and tips on collaging.
