I am a college student so I don’t always have time to blog. I realize that my blog will never be as big as some blogs because I can’t put that much time and energy into it (and probably some of my own creative limits). That doesn’t stop me from enjoying blogging though. Sure, I get excited when my site views are higher (thanks readers!) but I feel better when I click “publish”. Knowing that my viewpoint and a little part of me is floating in the cyber goo, available to anyone anywhere….now, that is astounding. I am amazed by teh internetz and I want to encourage people to get out there! Enter the twisted, never-ending internet waterpark of cyber goo! (Yes, I just made that sentence…I feel ashamed.)
Note: Any computer advice comes from using Windows 7. Also, I use Microsoft Word set up with my blog to publish then I (sometimes) edit using wordpress.com.
Tips
Always cite your material!
Save the image. When you save the image you can choose to save it as the regular name; this is my backup in case I forget to attach a hyperlink. You can google the whole image name later and you will come up with the link.
Where to save. I save my images to my Desktop. I store them here because it reminds me to make the post; if I get too many images I insert them all into a Word document and link them. Ten images easily become one word document and it doesn’t take a lot of time.
Attaching a link to the image. Note: dragging your Word document to one side of the screen to ½ if (great Windows 7 feature!) and saving your images on your desktop is easiest. If not you can open the folder in the Windows explorer and ½ it on the other side. Either way, right click on the image and click on properties. Go to the details tab and paste the hyperlink in the comments box. Click ok.
(Split screen on Windows)
(Properties prompt)
Use Microsoft Word. Start a “new blog post” and set up your account(s) with Word. This gives me more freedom on formatting and is easier to compose a post in. Also, you can save it and work on it later without being connected to the internet (for instance, I am writing this in a car through Pennsylvania! 4 hours down, 6 ½ to go!)
When in doubt use social media and commenting to promote your site. I have gotten clicks from my commenting account on Jezebel.com (which I don’t use anymore ‘cuz the new Jezebel layout sucks) and my twitter gives me a way to connect with possible readers when I don’t have time to make a post. Post on sites with similar interests but, DO NOT COMMENT WITH YOUR ONLY A LINK TO YOUR SITE. That’s just very lazy and a little off-putting. Instead you can link your name to your site (just edit your account profile) or post it after an insightful comment.
Don’t be hard on yourself. There are a lot of sites out there and chances are you progress will be slow. Do it for yourself and write about what you know. If you are busy like me then make scheduled posts and compile the things you like into categories to make regular posts. Sprinkle in new content when you have and write about what you know.
